Workshop 1 in Hurghada and Luxor

Workshop one “Sustainable Energy Needs Assessment and introduction to CoM and SEAP approach including BEI operations” was held for Hurghada on 19 May and for Luxor on 21 May with the participation of the focal point, members of council and technicians.

During this first workshops the key expert of the Mashreq region Mr. Serge Yazigi with mayors and technical team of municipalities discussed the expected objectives on this stage of the project: 

Solar systems on the rise in Lebanon

The Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC), one of CES-MEDs consortium partners, works with the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water to address energy saving and renewable energies at the national level.

The LCEC has just released the latest numbers on solar projects in Lebanon under Banque du Liban's (BdL) NEEREA (National Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Action) mechanism. Under NEEREA, BdL issues loans at discounted rates, specifically targeted for renewable energy project.

The Municipal Council of Boumerdès’ Communal Popular Assembly voted on joining the CoM

The Municipal Council of Boumerdes’ Communal Popular Assembly, one of the three partnering municipalities in Algeria with the EU-funded CES-MED project, voted on their accession to the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) on November 9, 2014. The city will be enlisted on the CoM webpage, after the decision of the municipal council is approved by the Wilaya.

Thermal Standard Building Compliance Tool for Lebanon available for download

The Lebanese Association for Energy Saving & the Environment (ALMEE) has recently released a software application that allows to analyse and plan a building's thermal insulation. Using this simple tool, one can assess whether a building adheres to the "Thermal Standard for Buildings in Lebanon (2010)".

Building envelopes are key in saving energy, a goal CES-MED pursues with the Sustainable Energy Action Plans we develop in Lebanon and other countries in the Maghreb and Mashreq.

SUDeP Grants awarded to municipalities in the Maghreb & Mashrek

SUDeP, Sustainable Urban Demonstration Projects, is a project funded by the European Union. Its goal is to enable local authorities in the ENPI South Mediterranean Partner Countries to implement actions incorporated in their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) or in similar local action plans targeting sustainable urban development.

CES-MED has encouraged municipalities that work with us to apply for SUDeP grants and cooperates closely with the SUDeP team.

SEAP workshops in Morocco and Tunisia

The municipality of Benslimane in Morocco, hosted on January 20, 2015 the inception workshop of the SEAP study in the premises of the Regional Observatory for the Environment and Sustainable Development (L’Observatoire Régional de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable - OREDD). The city also sought the involvement of external services (energy suppliers, public authorities etc.) to raise awareness of the importance of their contribution in the BEI phase for the development of the city’s SEAP.
