Kairouan is the capital of the governorate of Kairouan in Tunisia. Proclaimed the Capital of Islamic Culture, it is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. The city was founded by the Arabs around 670. During the reign of Caliph Mu'awiya (r. 661-680), it became an important Islamic and Quranic education center, attracting a large number of Muslims from various parts of the world, immediately after Mecca and Medina.
Rich in historical monuments: Great Mosque of Uqba, Aghlabid Basin, ramparts, medina, the barber mausoleum, mosque of three doors and others.
